An article that defines “Neighborhood Character” was provided.  A City of Traverse City Zoning Map was also distributed.  Concern was expressed over proposed changes to R2 zoned districts. R2 zoning in central neighborhood is from Eighth St to Front St between Wadsworth and Union St. If you are concerned about proposed changes to zoning please contact the planning commission and attend their meetings. The planning commission meets on the first and third Tuesday each month at 6:00 pm in the Commission Chambers.

Representatives from the Traverse City Community Design team, Suzannah Tobin, Ken Richmond, Dana Goodwin, Jill Vincent shared the process that is required to extend the boundaries of the Central Neighborhood Historic District. The proposed expansion would be between Division and Locust Street, between the 8th and 9th St alley and Griffin St. An opportunity exists with the completion of the master plan to explore character design. Chapter 14-62 allows creation of historic districts

In order to start the expansion process 20% of property owners in the new area must sign a petition to begin creating a study.

After comletion of the study more than 50% of property owners must agree to the change.

The first step will take door to door discussions and educatiion about what a historic district means. A sign up sheet is provided for those interested in training to canvas their neighborhood. A training session sometime before spring break with door to door possibly starting Aprl 1st.
